Despite all of us being connected by social media, people are lonelier than ever. It’s become a tired cliché. Through the last decade, social media has become a part of all of our lives and it’s becoming more and more clear to the average person that these platforms aren’t actually connecting us to our friends. They aren’t designed to do that. These apps are designed to hold our attention so that they can sell advertising space. You have to ask, ‘Why isn’t there a feature on Facebook that allows you to meet up with friends who are nearby? Why is there no button you can press to say you’re bored and looking to hang out with someone you know?’ And the answer is simple. They don’t want you to leave the app.
